All's quiet

Big News!
First off, the arrival of a brand new EP-length release from the Yawns -- the final recordings made in Tiny Town. Dig Everday Occurrences Under Extraordinary Circumstances.
And B) the Yawns have booked a rare public performance on June 26 at Artomatic. A team of researchers are convening to plan the affair.

End of Tiny Town is nigh
The Yawns have been evicted from Tiny Town. But no worries. It's an era of change, no doubt. With the change will come:

  • the release of an appropriately tiny album sometime very soon which will contain the last known sounds to be recorded within Tiny Town
  • the creation of a new recording space, tentatively named 'Not So Tiny Town,' and promising slightly more leg-room
  • the full band version of the Yawns still slaves away at an earnest pace with the goals of not waking the neighbors and making the great american rock and roll record or whatever
  • Telling Tomorrow from Today is currently "out of print" and currently unavailable anywhere. It will return soon enough. For free, like most of the Nothing's Perfect Records catalog
  • for the first time in 3 years, the Yawns are not planning on participating in this year's RPM Challenge. A tree fell in the forest, and no one heard

    Rest No More
After a few months of relative peace and quiet, the Yawns are back in the saddle working on the next album. The rock and roll trio toils away in a cool basement, and the rest of the crew is laying down countless tracks of what is shaping up to be... well, who knows yet? Only time will tell.

    New Handmade Popular Musics
Two new albums have hit the virtual shelves. A Golden Age is the Yawns masquerading as a bluegrass quartet. You and What Army?, meanwhile, is a hastily assembled collection of sonic experiments that formed much of this year's result of the record-an-album-february affair.

In other grand news, The End of the Rainbow, the Yawns' scored short film will be screened again next Thursday, May 29, in Silver Spring as part of the 48 Hour Film Festival's Best of DC selection. Tickets go on sale this Friday.

    Friday, April 11, 2008

  • The Yawns' album You and What Army? recorded in February will mostly be scrapped, unless you can unearth it at RPM Challenge.
  • YAWA? is mostly being scrapped in favor of the bluegrass quartet album that the Yawns are currently completing. The remaining bits of YAWA? will be released simultaneously with the as yet untitled bluegrass album sometime in May or June.
  • The rock and roll album is on ice for now, but recording should resume shortly. We hope.
  • Preparations have begun for this year's 48 Hour Film Festival. The Yawns will again provide a score for an entry this year. Filming and recording will take place during the first weekend of May.

    A pattern emerges
It's February again, and that means 2 albums are in the works. One will be created hastily by the end of the month as part of the album-in-a-month challenge. The other, more elaborate affair, has only just started to take shape. Stay tuned.

    Tuesday, January 22, 2008
Thanks to all who came out to experience the Yawns last weekend. You can hear all the gory details here..
Meanwhile, recording begins in earnest for the next Yawns album. A nation holds their breath...

    From the Oh Crap file
Thanks to the power of your favorite social networking web site, the Yawns are now booked for a show in January. Now to figure out what exactly is going to happen at said show. The date is January 13, the venue is the Red and the Black on Capitol Hill in DC, and the other band on the bill is The Broken Letters, from Alabama. I wonder if either knows what they've signed up for.

    No news is good news
In lieu of a full fledged update, here are some key points to be made while it's still hot outside:

  • while quiet, the Yawns are certainly not dormant. grand plans are being made to be unveiled at a later date
  • the track "It Don't Mean Nothing Without A Name" from Two Days in the Dark has been selected for inclusion on a compilation. This compilation may be available for sale at Starbucks. Or it may not.
  • ice cream-recipes-in-progress are available here.
  • Wednesday, June 13, 2007
It Don't Mean Nothing Without A Name is here!
The album that has lingered for nearly a year is now complete. Come and get it for nothing!

    Monday, May 7, 2007
    Look What's Coming
The weekend was spent scoring another short film for the 48 hour film festival. The film - Look What's Coming to Dinner - will show at the AFI Theater in Silver Spring, MD on Friday night. When it's available, I'll provide a web version.

    Thursday, April 19, 2007
    Stuff is happening
That other album hasn't been totally abandoned quite yet. On the contrary. It's still very much alive and moving. 9 tracks completely mixed, awaiting mastering, and 3 other tracks in various stages. It'll happen sometime.

    Tuesday, March 20, 2007
Two Days in the Dark Oddcast and album #3 update
Out of hibernation, we have a new Oddcast. This time, it's the new album Two Days in the Dark which recorded during 2 very cold weeks in February, as part of the RPM Challenge.

Meanwhile, work on the other album continues at a snail's pace. It should be out sometime this year.

    Tuesday, January 30, 2007
Album Update and the RPM Challenge
The Yawns have been hard at work on the latest album for last few months, and progress is going steadily and smoothly. Eight tracks are fully mixed awaiting mastering, and another 5-6 are in various stages. In an effort to completely derail the project, the Yawns are temporarily shifting focus to take part in the RPM Challenge. February has been declared Record Production Month, and the challenge is to fully produce an album during the month of February. Tune in March 1, for the final product.

    New Oddcast
A brand new Oddcast this month, featuring an old collection of songs that tell the tale of brothers Tom and Randy Hanks, Tom's wife, an unfortunate boating accident, and, finally, murder. This is only the second time this saga has been presented in sequence. The first was an Awnings for Eyelids concert in the Seattle YMCA on Saturday afternoon in 2003.

    Saturday, December 2, 2006
    Nothing's New
The Yawns are putting together quite a record. It'll continue down the path where Telling Tomorrow from Today left off. There's still a lot to be done yet, but much has been done already. The secret weapon keyboardist rolls into town for a quick session this week.

Speaking of TTFT, Nothing's Perfect Records will be rolling out a special 5.1 edition of the Yawns' first album just in time for the holidays.

    Wednesday, November 15, 2006
    A new AFE Oddcast
A brand new Oddcast featuring some newly remixed Awnings for Eyelids tracks that were recorded in January 2004 during the sessions that produced their album, but didn't actually make the final cut. They're pretty kickass, nonetheless, particularly the Everyyear with two drummers.

    Tuesday, October 3, 2006
    It's Rocktober!
That means a new Oddcast after many months of hibernation. This time around, we feature a bunch of random stuff including some unreleased new and old Yawns material, Awnings for Eyelids, Helper Monkey, and the first sounds to emerge from the Damp Thoughts sessions in August.

What's better than rock and roll on a Saturday?
Rock and Roll on a SUNDAY. Come to the Galaxy Hut in Arlington, VA, on this Sunday, July 16, to catch Helper Monkey performing the rock like only they can. Come prepared.

    Saturday, July 1, 2006
    telling tomorrow from today progress
Mixing and mastering were completed simultaneously earlier this week, with a bunch of late-comers coming in very close to the wire.

All that remains is designing the cover. I've got a couple of ideas thus far, but nothing to show for them yet.

There will be a new Oddcast soon, in some form or another.

    The Yawns album coming together
It's a been a productive couple of months in Tiny Town, and as a result, some details regarding the Yawns debut album are starting to take shape. There's the title, for one. Telling Tomorrow from Today will be 12 tracks in total and has turned into a collection of brand spanking new songs (i.e. Robot Camera, Lay Me Down in Fern Valley, and Use Your Inside Voice,) a few freshly reworked never-been-recorded oldies -- including a couple that are over 10 years old (i.e. Yours, The Big Tickle, and On the Phone,) and piles of sonic lunacy, yet very few guitar solos. A few outstanding items remain to be recorded at this point, but tracking is at about 90%. Then it's on to the mixing stage where someone has to make sense of aforementioned lunacy. Stay tuned.

Don't Spread Germs -- A public service announcement
The Yawns would like to take a minute to send an important message. Don't spread germs. Nothing's Perfect Records presents the first of several PSA's with the Yawns providing the soundtrack.

    Wednesday, May 10, 2006
    The Lens Trade
As previously reported, JE scored a film for inclusion in the 48 Hour Film Festival this past weekend. The results of the sessions can be heard in the latest Oddcast.

    On the big screen
This past weekend, JE provided the score for an entry in the 48 Hour Film Festival. The film will be showing as part of the competition on May 10 at 7pm at the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, MD. Say "hello" to Helper Monkey. They are featured in the latest Oddcast.

    Friday, Feb. 24, 2006
This morning, while checking the logs, I see je.net had a visit from someone in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I can only hope it's from little Bessie, a girl I once knew.

    Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006
Sadly, the The Crispin Glover tour is officially on ice for the moment. However, touring in their stead will be The Yawns who'll be hitting the road in May. Stay tuned. Big things will happen soon.

    Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006
There's a new group on the scene. They're called The Yawns. Nothing's Perfect Records is all sorts of giddy. Stay tuned.

Where were you on Valentine's Day, 2005? I know where I was.

    Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006
Helper Monkey spent the weekend laying down the basic tracks for a short, but sweet EP. Stay tuned. The weekend ended Monday night with a great show at the Galaxy Hut. Thanks for making it out.

In other recording news, Jonathan has much of the basics for his next release just about complete. It's looking to be a busy couple of weeks in Tiny Town, pulling all of this together.

Last bit of news, a tour of the East Coast is taking shape for March. If you can help booking a show in your town, please let us know.

    Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006
Helper Monkey is back at the Galaxy Hut on Monday, 1/23. Prepare for the rocking.

    Monday, Jan. 9, 2006

Helper Monkey played admirably despite being down a man. Thanks to all in attendance. The new Oddcast will be up as soon as I can find the master tapes of the source material. Seems they've gone AWOL.

    Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005
Helper Monkey will play another house party this Saturday. If you want in, drop a line. And a new Oddcast will be posted shortly. It'll be good.

    Monday, Oct. 3, 2005
There's been a lot of activity in Tiny Town recently. Virtual piles of virtual tape are beginning to stack up all over the place. I pity the fool who'll be tasked with mixing and making sense of it all.

    Monday, Sept. 26, 2005
New Oddcast featuring highlights from the JE & Friends acoustic set at Simmonstock. The whole set is available for download, too. Now, on to Supergroup mixing, which sounds much better than I remember at the time.

    Friday, Sept. 23, 2005
Still mixing the acoustic set from Simmonstock. Hope to have it finished during the weekend. Supergroup mixing will have to wait a little longer.

    Monday, Sept. 12, 2005
The Tiny Town Seattle Roadshow concluded this weekend. Highlights were an unannounced Awnings for Eyelids perfomance on 9/3, followed by a private AFE session the following day, a solo acoustic set by JE joined by some dear friends, and a Supergroup hootenany both on 9/10 at Simmonstock at the new Wedgewood Pavillion sponsored by Home Street Bank in Seattle. I hope the next Oddcast will feature highlights from all.

    Monday, August 29, 2005

The latest Oddcast will be posted shortly.

    Tuesday, July 5, 2005
A brand new Oddcast with a brand new concept. This time around I tried something a little different and created something like a radio show. This week's episode highlights the career of Awnings for Eyelids. Let me know what you think.

    Monday, June 27, 2005
Two new tracks in the The Oddcast -- a live track from The Crispin Glover and another outtake from the SFTT sessions.

The band tentatively known as Helper Monkey played to an appreciative audience at a lovely house party over the weekend. We played the 6 or so originals we kind of know, plus Chest Fever by the Band. All agreed it was a successful first step for the group. Thanks for all who listened.

    Tuesday, June 21, 2005
